I have just installed internet explorer 8, message says internet explorer is currently running with add-ons disabled, what are add-ons please.

Add-ons are additional programmes that "enhance" the browser users experience whilst using the internet. There are lots of add-ons available such as flash players etc. Have a google and see what comes up.
