Why only the elderly? and what age does that term refer to?

Rambling

Rambling Report 15 Jul 2009 19:43

As in 'worshipped and adored' romantically?
Revered by the younger ones?

Helen Report 15 Jul 2009 19:59

60,70,80,onwards.

What happens when we are trapped in our own homes, and can not get
to any church worship??

70 isn't elderly, not these days, in general... 60 definitely isn't... most men are still working, and many women have opted to do so as well....

They, in general, consider themselves to be older, but not elderly..... they might have more creaky or achey bits than their younger friends, but not necessarily so!!

Daff (almost older!!) xxxx

It used to be that, if you had been a regular church goer the minister (Baptist church) would visit you for a prayer and a chat.
edit to say, I don't consider 70 elderly these days and certainly not 60, I am 69 and never think opf myself as elderly.

You don't look elderly at all, Ann... Sue M is infirm though, with her wonky leg ;¬))..... perhaps you could borrow her crutch?

Sorry for saying elderly!!

I am sure that there are Older people in our area who would love to come and worship, but unable because of transport.

My brother turned 60 on Sunday. He and my other brother (59 in August) had just put up scaffolding and elder brother was measuring joists and repairing them as a start to putting a roof on the derelict building he has bought - as a long-term project!!
The youngsters (my sister and I, 57 and 53) were up ladders removing old lime mortar from between the stones - then re-mortaring them.
Last year sis & I were chopping down trees!

Aah Helen that is better (is that Helen who is Helen or Helen who is Jane??)
I don't mind being an older person, or even a senior citizen.

(what was it Shakespeare said?? A rose by any other name Lol!!)

In the area where I live public transport is quite good, although to attend any one of five churches in the village I wouldn't need to get public transport, well four of the five, the fifth might be a bit far to walk. But I take your point, those that live in outlying villages might have a problem getting to church. maybe the churches should get together and see what they can do about it (joint mini bus etc?)

Helen, if your church has a pamphlet they deliver ( or a local free paper or similar) maybe an advert suggesting that people might volunteer to drive elderly folk to and from church, and establishing a contact number for same?

Helen, take the worship to them, you dont have to be in a church to worship the Lord, we used to go into a old folks home it surprised us how pleased the people were to see us ,lots wanted to choose their favorite song and hymns, also many requested prayer ,and we enjoyed our time with them all......

And it doesn't have to be a Sunday either.

Why not put a notice up in the local libraries asking those who have difficulty getting to church to contact you, or somebody. You will have more of an idea then if there are people out there.

Helen

Helen Report 15 Jul 2009 21:19

Spot on!!

We will take the worship to them.

Our small group will love to do that.

Thank you all for your ideas.
God bless.

You could contact the clergyman at whichever church you are attached to and ask him to put this transport problem to his congregation.

Many clergy and lay assistants take out Holy Communion to those who are unable to leave their homes for whatever reasonm be they young or older folk. Again, contact the church and ask.

At one stage I would have suggested joining in the worship on tv on a Sunday but that seems to have gone right out of the proverbial window!!

Hello,
I know of one church which records their morning service on to tape, make copies, and then volunteers take these out to the homes of the housebound.
This way the recipients get a chat with someone from their church, and the chance to listen to the service for themselves.
It works very well for those who are unable to attend worship even if transport could be arranged.

Dear All

Hello

Sometimes, Churches will e-mail the details of the
Sunday Service and other important religious dates to
people, whatever age or circumstance, so that they can join
in the service around the time when it is held at the church.

This works very well.

There is the BBC Radio 2 programme on Sundays
at about 8-00/8-30pm.

This is very comforting to listen to.

Hope this helps

Whatever your faith may you keep safe and well.

Very best wishes to all
xx
