Tree Sharing Etiquette!

I would be grateful if someone could let me know tree sharing etiquette. I have had a contact from someone who wants to look at my tree. I am 99.9% sure we are not related. The dates fit but nothing else does (i.e. occupation). I have asked for more info i.e. birthplace but he just requests to look at my tree, I am loathe to allow him access - am I being rude? Comments welcome Thanks

Not rude at all...wait for him to provide more information to ensure that there is indeed a link before opening your tree

Hi Tracey just to add to the above, when I do find a genuine link and I open my tree, I leave it open for a few weeks then close it again - long enough for them to take a look but not long enough - unless they're really quick - to copy what they shouldn't, eg in- laws of mine who are nothing to do with them.

So far no-one has asked me to re-open so I assume everyone is happy.

You'd be amased what a determined name collector can copy in a matter of hours.

I don't open my tree anymore, I am happy to send them a GEDCOM of the branch if I am pretty sure we have a match or written family tree, but no one other than my brother needs to see my whole tree.

I have hidden the details of living people on my tree, but even so no one needs to see both my materal and paternal branches.
