Rumbling thunder here today, got me remembering... "That's just angels/God getting the coal in again" ! (It does sound like coal going down a shute) That was always said to us as kids.- Presumably so we weren't scared of it. There must be many more of these words of wisdom out there. What about regional expressions? Round here, one is " He's as deaf as a gate stayle".
and the more usual " It's a bit black over Will's Mother's!" is very commonly heard. One very local expression for a busy place is - "It's as bad as Leighton Buzzard on a market day!"

What gems do other members hear or use?

Lots from the Midlands:

''He/she is as mad as a box of frogs''- said of someone who is ecentric or even simply scatter brained.

''Stop playing your face'' - said to children who were sulking or unhappy

''You are as black as a grate'' said to mucky children after they had ''played out'' (played outside)

''You have a face as long as livery street'' or ''You look like you've lost half a crown and found sixpence'' - said to someone who appeared unhappy

''You been christened with a gramaphone needle?'' - asked of very talkative people!

There are oodles - many of them with long histories

On a dull weather day that's brightening up......

There's enough blue sky to make a Dutch man a pair of trousers.

Oh Yes Island - I'd forgotten that one! - Wonder where it came from? Also I was always being told " Your hair is a straight as a Yard of pump water"!

Very true Gwyn. A pal was here this aft & we got talking about classic expressions & her rather snobby Mother used to say (When disapproving of decor ) -
"Oh, It was very early Odeon Cinema'!
