Addendum to my earlier post, ( I used wood screws as an example of the finish, NOT the process...)
when you look at a Stanley type wood plane, the black finish is likely to be Black Jappan,

When I was a lot younger a box of say No8 r/h wood screws , would have had " Black Jap" on the label, ie they were painted black.

Could it be 'japanner'? Japanning was a method of applying varnish or lacquer to objects.

One of my ancestors is listed as having an occupation as a Japenner. I have googled this but am no wiser. Can anyone help as to what it is . Thanks
