Can anyone help on where to search? My gt grandfather John Barker 1856 born Whitby, N Yorkshire doesn't show on any census return until 1901 although his siblings and parents do - any tips?

Was that definitely his date and place of birth.
This record is on freebmd, but too early for age to be included.
