Hello Does anyone know anything about Portland Barracks in Shoreditch? My ancestor (Edward Darkin c.1826) was alledgedly born there but I can't find any information about the barracks when I do a search on the internet. |

Try google. I just put in Barracks Shoreditch London and a lot of info re barrackscame up....unless of course you have looked at these and couldn,t find what you wanted. |

Thanks guys - Edward's father's name was Edward Darking and I believe he may have been a gatekeeper (possibly at the barracks?) |

There was a Portland Barracks in, I think, Dorset. Can't find anything on one in Shoreditch. Might be worth you contacting the local archives for that area. |

I use to live near Shoreditch and have been doing FT research into the area for 15 years and have never heard of a Barracks being there ofcourse I could be wrong and it sounds more like a street name to me. If I come across anything similar I will post details. |

I looked at the GENDOCS site and in 1861 there was a Militia Barracks in that part of London. Hope that you find what you are searching for. |

The Portland Prison was built in 1847 to house convicts, also as a Barracks to house the soldiers to guard them.also the Verne Citadel. |
