Hello Does anyone know anything about Portland Barracks in Shoreditch? My ancestor (Edward Darkin c.1826) was alledgedly born there but I can't find any information about the barracks when I do a search on the internet.

Thanks

Thanks guys - Edward's father's name was Edward Darking and I believe he may have been a gatekeeper (possibly at the barracks?)

There was a Portland Barracks in, I think, Dorset. Can't find anything on one in Shoreditch. Might be worth you contacting the local archives for that area.

I use to live near Shoreditch and have been doing FT research into the area for 15 years and have never heard of a Barracks being there ofcourse I could be wrong and it sounds more like a street name to me. If I come across anything similar I will post details.

I looked at the GENDOCS site and in 1861 there was a Militia Barracks in that part of London. Hope that you find what you are searching for.

The Portland Prison was built in 1847 to house convicts, also as a Barracks to house the soldiers to guard them.also the Verne Citadel.
The name Durkin could also be a variant of Darkin,Durkin is a Portland Name I think,There was a football Ref called Durkin that came from Portland in the 1980/1990s. Good Luck with search.
