Sorry Cass, I disagree with you there.

I don't see why people who report nasty vindictive crude, derogatory, malicious posts etc are seen an immature and why they need to contact those posters before they report the thread.

The posters that post these nasty vindictive crude, derogatory posts know what they are doing and know that they are against the terms and conditions of GR before they post them but do so anyway. If someone sends them a pm, they tend to send nasty pms back or twist the context of the message, meanwhile this nasty vindictive crude, derogatory post is still sitting there for anyone to read. This is a family history site used by people of different ages and backgrounds, I would not want anyone of my gran's generation reading such filth.

Your argument seems to suggest that those who report genuinely nasty/abusive posts are somehow in the wrong and are childish which by default almost condones what the poster is doing.

I report abusive posts and tell the poster I have done so.

Sadly some vindictive people on here just press the RR button because they don't like an answer they receive or they dislike the poster.

Once the button has been pressed then unfortunately the review is left in the hands of some cyber person we all assume has the ability to read. That isn't always the case.

As said before, I have never hit the RR button, but I reserve the right to do so. There wouldn't be any need if GR monitored the boards like some other Chat Rooms are monitored.

If people are thick enough to post offensive remarks, I doubt there would be much point in contacting them by p.m. Who wants to be bothered with someone who is craving attention? THEY want everyone to see what they have to say - not just one person.

Cass.... try it and find out, lol...... it just isn't as easy as that.... I thought that, once upon a time.... but not any more... although I do pm the *innocent* posters, who use words they do not realise could cause offence on a nice thread!

The flamebaiters, and WUM's would ignore a pm........ or use it against you (so I believe, not actually had that done to me)

Of course, if you don't find these boards to your liking, then you could go elsewhere!!

Oh, and I agree, Uggers is always interesting... he has a knack with words!

As far as whooshing my own threads or posts... I would, mostly, if asked, but not always if I feel strongly, and know that I haven't contravened any rules..... but I will always stand by what I say... if I find out I was wrong, I leave the original, and edit with an update or apology or the right bit of info.... but others like to *housekeep* and tidy up every so often. And then some bait and then whoosh their own.

Most whooshing at the moment is of whole threads, many of them totally innocent of any aggro... and others which have had foul things added. The people pressing RR have done so not because of the content of the thread, but as a personal vendetta against the poster/s. Now that is definitely wrong.... and hypocritical!

I have had posts removed, Cass, in the days when a single offensive post in an otherwise perfectly lovely thread could be offensive. I have only once definitely been one of the causes of an entire thread being removed by GR.... about 2 years ago and it belonged to someone I was fond of. I told her I had reported it both before and after the report... I certainly did not do it behind her back, but even had I done so.... well, I have the right to remain anonymous, too.

I recently reported a foul mouthed, suggestive and totally unacceptable thread... it is not hypocritical to stand by what you believe is right... what is hypocritical is to SAY one thing, then DO the other. I certainly hope that I was in part responsible for that thread being removed!

I almost always inform the poster that I have reported..... not in the slightest bit hypocritical, I don't think! When someone posts something so foul and derogatory... then I do not inform... but would certainly say I had if I was asked.

Hi Cass, I've never seen anyone who says that they have reported threads/posts deny that they do previously. So I don't think they're being hypocritical.

I said many years ago after some sort of incident probably long forgotten, that i would have no qualms reporting threads that are offensive and I still don't. Somethings just can't be ignored or laughed at for the reasons Daff pointed out.

However, I'm not a regular whoosher lol and certainly wouldn't ask for threads/posts to be deleted just because I can or because I don't like someone. My finger isn't poised on the trigger button waiting for someone in particular to post.

However, it is sad that there are people lately who use the RR button on innocent posts purely to cause discontent. It is they who are abusing the system.

Hi Cass :-)

I don't think anyone on Ugger's thread said that they report posts at the drop of a hat. I also don't think people that are genuinely offended by what sometimes goes on and therefore report certain posts are "chaff" or aren't "mature". Somethings you just can't have a laugh at as they are deeply offensive and don't deserve to be on a family tree forum in the middle of the day.

However, I can understand what you mean when people report innocent threads for the fun of it, that certainly isn't mature.

MrDaff

MrDaff Report 22 Jul 2009 20:33

Actually, Cass.... I have pressed RR.... and will exercise my right to do so in the future.... I consider myself mature enough to know what is what, and if something becomes crude, racist, sexist, homophobic.... or just downright nasty... then I will report. The boards are not monitored any other way... now, if we had moderators, that might be different.

I make no excuses, and most certainly no apologies for reporting if I find something abusive. And I refuse to be made to feel guilty for doing so... those who know me, know that I do not report lightly........ I am not five years old, needing teacher to tell me how to behave!

With respect

Daff

Hi Jean. Nothing personal. I just moved over here because there were more variety of topics here...on gen it got to a stage (for me) that there were only game threads and sympathy threads, any others got shoved off the page in no time.

Nothing against them at all, but the chit chat was all here...
