Ancestry or The Genealogist for UK research?

Pros and cons, please.

Are there NO supporters of either of these genealogical resources?

Hmmmm......

I use Ancestry Minerva, because it seemed to be the site most people used other than here , it covered more of the data I was looking for, I took out the Worldwide option to look at American records specifically. It works well for me and I think if you have it for a year it is plenty of time to get a good amount of tree done.

I use Ancestry........But as I've never used Genealogist, so I can't compare.

But I don't hold all my research in one basket. I also use BMD, FreeReg, IGI, 1911 census on FMP, National Archives & Scotlands People.

Some hold the same info, but the different search facilities allow you to search more easily for info.

We too use ancestry have done for about six years now.Could not manange without it...

Having said that subs have just ended and as I have got some free credits with a magazine subscription I am about to try Find My Past again.After trying it before we changed to ancestry.
Never tried the Genealogist.

I use both plus a few others but I would say if you just want one sibscription Ancestry is probably your best bet. The Genealogist does make the census easier to read, you can see the original but it's also all laid out for you by household too,easier on the eyes, and you've also got nonconformist and overseas, plus others.

If it's mainly British go for Ancestry, if you need any other info don't forget there are marvellous people on this site who'll do lookups for you

I've just had a look (again!) at the resources offered by each, and in view of the additional Non-conformist and Landowner records, together with the cheaper sub (£40 for Personal Premium - credit free), I think I'll give Genealogist a 6 month trial.

Later...

I began to register with The G, to purchase my subscription, but found that I had already done so at some point in the past! I was then offered a free 30 day sub 'as a valued customer, who has never bought a subscription' - no credit card details taken!

So, I have got 30 days, plus 10 credits, AND another incentive if I sign up subsequently. Looks pretty good to me!

I'll post my impressions of The G here, when I've had a chance to evaluate it.

So far, the price is good, but at some point, with ancestors in NZ, Canada, and the US, I shall probably have to use Ancestry - just missed their recent cut-price offer by half an hour!. I'm just not keen on organisations that seem to have a monopoly.
