Of metal micky train line braces ??


Son ( age 14) on Friday had the fixaters put on each tooth (metal bits). His next appointment is Friday coming to have the wire & bands put on.

He was told not to eat things too hard, like whole apple or hard crusts from pizza.

Last night he bit into a choc chip cookie which wasnt very hard at all & one of the front bottom fixaters fell off.

Now he is peed off and so am I.

Now its call to the dentist mon morning to see about having it put back on (5 min job if they can fit him in or the second appointment will be put back nearer to our holiday which I dont want)

Where do we draw the line on what he can or cant eat ??

We are going Florida mid August, so will the poor begger have to live on mush :o(((

Most food you have to take a bite out of and chew it with a little resistance.

Im so fed up, I wish the dentist was happy to wait until after our hoilday to get the whole lot done :o((

My elder daughter had these. I seem to remember that she couldn't eat corn on the cob, or chicken off the bone. I'm sure that there were other things that she couldn't eat, but I can't remember that it affected her particularly.

I do remember that the first few days after the braces were fitted she was in considerable pain.

She's got lovely teeth now and she is very glad that she had them done.

My daughter had train tracks on her teeth for almost four years.

Lost count of how many times the wires snapped, fixators fell off ect

This will probably happen quite regular for him.

We never had to have an appointment to fix what ever had snapped/broken. Daughter just used to bob in after school, let them know and they would squeeze her in inbetween clients.

It all becomes less of an ordeal within time.

She now has perfect teeth!!

My advice would be for him to break his food up not bite straight into it, thats what my son did. And when he first gets them on and each time they are tightened chew sugar free gum to massage the mouth and gums. Steak sandwiches where the pain for my boy couldn't chew straight into them.

He isnt allowed chewing gum or similer as it gets caught in the braces.

I really hope we wont have too much trouble on our holiday. I really wish Id phoned to cancel until afterwards now :o(((

I had lower fixed appliance years ago and ate anything. Chewing gum was a complete no no as it gets tangled up.............takes ages to remove!!

From a professional point of view:

The bond used to stick on the little brackets is really strong. Occasionally one of them does come detached. It is just unlucky but is easily fixed back.

Apples are best cut up to eat as they are one of the things that you bite into with all of your front teeth. In fact, any food which you would usually do a big bite into is better being cut into smaller pieces first.

Go easy on sweet stuff as there is a greater risk of tooth decay. There would be nothing worse than having perfectly straight teeth with early caries marks.

The orthodontist will probably supply the ribbon wax, but if he doesn't.......ask for some. You can use it to cover any rough areas. Also get some tepes or an interspace brush to get into all the gaps.
