Been to buy one this afternoon here in Spain and low and behold instructions not in English - in French, Portugese and ofcourse Spanish. We are going to phone our friends tonight who are coming over on Sunday to bring one over but I have just been looking at Argos on line and most of them say UK and Ireland - so my question is what about Europe - are they more expensive covering Europe as well ?

Yes, you pay extra to cover Europe.

also if its a Tom Tom, every couple of months there are map coverage up-dates, which I have to pay for, mostly because its an early edition "One".

another thing I noticed is that the Isle of man is not covered....and parts of Ireland....

Hi Mary

I live in Tenerife and last month we bought a sat nav in the UK as we want to spend some time touring main land Spain. It is a Tomtom XL IQ Edition.

I am now reading the box, it says

Europe 42 Countries, Advanced Lane Guidance, Map Share, Help Me! Menu and Latest Map Guarantee.

We bought it in Currys It was 199.99 pounds. It was set up in English but there are lots of other languages available. We tested it in England in our hire car and it was great. When we got back home to Tenerife we switched it on and up came our road, town etc so it obviously works in the Canary Islands too. Currys said that it was the latest Tomtom and that all the maps etc should be up to date but we have/had a month to do any necessary updates free of charge(we didn't need to) and after that there is a charge but I don't know how much that costs.

We have UK only Tom Tom and it is excellent for what we need it for. We don't pay for updates which cost I believe in the region of £10 a month.

A sat nav is only as good as the person inputting the initial info, we borrowed one when we went to Liverpool but o.h. got the input wrong on the way back so it was lucky I was able to get us out of Liverpool and on the way home without having to stop in the busy traffic and alter things. We did get it sorted out for the remainer of the journey back when we stopped for a comfort break.
Have fun with yours Mary,

A Swedish couple in search of the isle of Capri drove to Carpi, an industrial town in northern Italy, because they misspelt the name in their car's GPS.

Italian officials say the couple asked at Carpi's tourist office where they could find Capri's famous Blue Grotto.

The car's sat nav system had sent them 650km (400 miles) off course to Carpi.

"Capri is an island. They did not even wonder why they didn't cross any bridge or take any boat," said a bemused tourism official in Carpi.

Once they realised their mistake, the couple got back in their car and headed south, the official added.

Thanks for all the replies - hubby has asked our friends to bring one over from UK - what we thought odd was the one here in Spain had instructions in 3 languages but not English. Will let you know how we get on with it after our holiday in France - well hopefully France as that is where we should be going - lol
Thanks again
Love Mary xx
