My own Dad only died 5 years ago and there is a huge amount I don't know about his parents, let alone grandparents...........................maybe it's that which makes me tell endless stories to my own children about their ancestors.

I wasn't in the least bit interested in my paternal grandparents lives before I knew them until a few years ago when I got bitten by the family history bug, so i think it's perfectly normal for others to know little about their ancestors.

I couldn't work out when he died, was it before she was born? i missed a little bit at the beginning so it may have been mentioned there.

I wonder if Kate's dad wasn't very close to his father - seems he (the pilot) was a 'bit of a lad' - hence he wasn't spoken about much.

I think the family knew, she just couldn't be bothered finding out. unless it was just for the camera.

Amazing that the diary solved a query for historians. Hopefully the diary will be copied and the copy given to a museum/the archives/a historical society.

I think she did know he was a test pilot, but she didn't know what was involved.

However, she didn't realise that he did demonstration flying.

I agree Joan it's strange about her not being told of her grandfather being a test pilot,and to be able to actually hear his voice and see him on screen! no wonder she wept (i did too I thought it was very emotional.)

How interesting for you to be able to read the account of your father's experiences Linda.It's true men who went through the last war never liked to talk about the things that happened,my own Dad included,probably to horrific for them to remember.

I missed those Uggers. I've only just started watching WDYTYA this series although I caught a glimpse of Patsy Kensit crying.

I also saw the David Tennant programme (purely for genealogical purposes of course) and I caught the Boris Johnson episode which has been my favourite to date.

I must admit I have enjoyed this series even though Kate did cry a lot tonight. Saying that she didn't cry when she met up with the POW at the farm house. I think I would have cried when he told his story. (mind you she hardly let him speak)

A good one this week. What great characters Kate Humble had in her ancestors! but I find it hard to believe her parents didn't tell her of her grandfathers' exploits. When she learnt about their lives she was so proud and ashamed to not know.

Earsdon village is not far from where I live and to walk in the graveyard there and read of al the young lads & men who died is very,very sad.

I enjoyed seeing Kate's grandfather's film of his flying days,what a dare-devil wasn't he? and soo brave.

The Stalag camp was a moving story and the war historian was thrilled to see the written diary of events she had.

Kate certainly had three grandfathers to be proud of.

I agree, SRS. It's about making the people come alive but I have also enjoyed the ones where they've gone further back, such as the Barbara Windsor and Patsy Kensit ones

My own father was in a stalag, not the same one. He too was marched across Europe in horrific conditions. Eventually he was liberated from a different Stalag. He would never ever talk about it. I got his war records last year and have been piecing together details using the internet. I found some first hand accounts of the march he was on. Reading them was extremely upsetting for me.
This programme has revived some of those memories

It was very moving. It's strange to think that there may be a wealth of information about your family that you just haven't found yet.

Also, I wish someone would write up my family tree with the background of events like on WDYTYA.

Kate Humble. She certainly has ancestors to be proud of.

So sad about the mining disaster, but glad her ggggrandfather was proven innocent of any wrongdoing.
