I saw on 'Who Do You Think You Are' that the large commemorative penny was given to widow's of the 1st World War. I have a 'penny ' of my Uncle's I believe was given to his mother as as far as I know he was not married. Does anyone know if this is a fact.

Hiya Peggy... it was given to the next of kin... or the person designated by the soldier to receive a part of his wages. This was usually the mother of a single man.... and so many were just boys, not even old enough to vote, or marry without permission from parents!!

Love

I had heard that it was also known as the Dead Man's Penny.
