The irony is, I ordered a new cooker as I thought the oven had 'gone'.
Last week, I was cooking spare ribs in the oven when there was a series of really loud bangs from the kitchen. Torn between seeing what it was, and running out the front door, I did both - ran out the front door round to the back, and slowly opened the back door. The cooker was still there, so I rushed in, turned the oven off and went back in the front door!

Ordered the cooker - then had to clean behind the old one. Pulled it out, and the connector for an electric cooker was black!
Got an electrician out yesterday. He hadn't seen anything like it. Said it had been 'fizzling' away for ages - house could have caught fire at any time.
It was only when it went 'bang' that it finally blew the fuse - but it didn't activate the trip switch!

So, the oven on my old cooker wasn't broken. however I didn't cancel the new one, as 2 of the burners on the old one didn't work, the grill (in the single oven) was unuseable and it had glass doors that were impossible to clean.

New one has 2 ovens (small one with grill) and solid doors!

You're right Vicky. The other 'white' goods aren't so white - neither are the tiles!

Nothing as pleasant as a shrivelled pea, gwyn - just nasty slimy ancient grease!

The cooker arrived at 10:45 - I've spent all this time trying to unpack the thing! Of course it's raining, so kitchen floor covered in muddy footprints too!
There's no connecting hose - I didn't want the one from the old cooker as it was such a pain to get off - I presume it would have been a pain to get back on again!
Off to Southampton this afternoon to get one.

Lol Maggie.
What a lovely way to start the weekend.!
Did you find any food?
There always seems to be a shrivelled pea at least whenever I've tackled behind the cooker.
I haven't seen behind mine in ages...........

I hope the new cooker arrives OK.

Well Done Maggie. I remember I had a modern electric cooker that conked out on me. I rang a guy who said it eass the wiring from the cooker to the wall, and it would cost me £70. This was about 20yrs ago.

I bought the wiring and did it myself, and it was passed on when I had a fitted kitchen put in, so served a long time after that lol!!

So when you having your first dinner party lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I've done enough cleaning to last a month, Keith - okay so it was the pipework - so even if the house is untidy and fluffy where it shows - I know it's clean behind the cooker! LOL

I have a new gas cooker arriving this morning - between 7am and noon. Part of the deal is they take away the old cooker for £7.50 - which is a bargain - the council charge £20.
So guess who was up at 6am with gas turned off at the mains, squeezed in that grotty greasy place between the wall and cooker fighting with the bayonet fitting - and my brother told me it was easy!
Have to admit I haven't cleaned the pipework for years, it was YUK.
Took me the best part of an hour, lots of grease removal and WD40.
Unable to remove the safety chain, from the back of the cooker, but judging from the state of it, I'd rather buy a new one!

....... so now I'm waiting.......
