Dear All

Hello,

Today being the 1st of August, is Lammas Day.

In the pre-christian and Christian tradition, a loaf was baked
from the first harvested sheaf.

Our ancestors hoped for enough to eat through the autumn
into winter.

A time to give thanks to the earth for abundance and to plant seeds for the future.

Traditionally, after gathering in the harvest, people would have community celebrations, travel and trade.

Has anyone been making bread today?

Very best wishes to all
xx

Hi,

Am I right in saying that the Lammas Fair is celebrated every year in Scotland?

Dear Aileen

Hello

In theory, it should be celebrated but it depends on what individual communities decided to organise.

Under the influence of Scotland, the Cumbrians used Candlemas day in February and Lammas day to divide their financial year.

Lammas was a day to pay rents, settle debts, change jobs and move houses.

In Exeter, York and parts of Devon there were regular fairs,
some recorded in the 1820's.

The Royal Agricultural Society and other groups have tried to revive the celebrations of:

Plough Sunday
Rogation Tide
Lammas Day
Harvest Thanksgiving.

In some areas, the days are well celebrated.

Hope this helps

Very best wishes to you.
