Hi Catherine,

Go to googlemap and enter Knitsley. Then go onto "satellite". It looks like the red indicator is pointing to an empty field but close in and you can see the ground disturbances indicating former buildings. It looks as though Knitsley just disappeared. Maybe Stannifordham went the same way.

thanks all for your replys. I found the birthplace on the 1891 census and did think that it read Stamfordham, however taking a closer look it was Stannifordham. I found further evidence that this place did exist in the 1901 census when researching an address in Blackhill. It was listed as Stannifordham conside cum Knitsley. Thanks for the web/map ref. Bernie my Boy!

If you look at the map on this website it shows the area in 1885, before it had been developed into a major steel manufacturing site.
Consett steelworks and the town was developed immediately south of Shotley Bridge and to the west of Leadgate.

http://www.londonancestor.com/maps/bc-durham-n.htm

If you look on Googlemap you can see that the present day roads B6308, B6309 and B6310 all converge at Mendomsley Edge, which is North-East of where Consett would be built. and you can see them on the old map. But nowhere on either map is there a mention of Stannifordham.

Very puzzling, sorry I cannot help more.

There was a place called Stannifordham, I found this on Ancestry:

".................Mary b,1859 Michael b 1863 and Bernard b, 1865.They lived at a little place called Stannifordham on the outskirts of Consett close to the steelworks......................."

Where did you find the information about this place? If it's on a census perhaps the enumerator misheard or mis-spelt the name.

Hi Catherine,

Sometimes the old spellings have changed. I tried all villages in the North East but the only one in that area I can find is Stamfordham, which is in Northumberland. You will find it about 20 miles north of Consett.
