death certificate 1840 cause of death Visitation b

It wasn't until 1875 that the law was changed to require a doctor to normally certify the death. After this time you tend to see medical terminology, eg myocardial infarction, as opposed the Heart Attack.

Before this many deaths were uncertified. The informant simply gave the cause of death as he saw it. "Visitation from God" was quite common.

half the time they didnt know the cause of death esp 1n 1841 and a visitation by God might help the relatives to mourn the losss of the departed person

I have received this morning a death certificate dated 1840 saying ,Cause death Died by the Visitation of God Apoplexy
I have looked up meaning of APOPLEXY= Cerebral Haemorhage or Stroke
just thought it was odd that they should put Visitation by God,
