We are thinking of getting a Satnav, but I don't know which are good or which to avoid.

Any useful input would be much appreciated to help me choose.

I have been on a few forums and Tom Tom seem to get most peoples vote.

Yes I believe the Tom Tom one onwards can put you back on route if you go wrong or need to detour for any reason xx

With MY tom tom one( early edition, )If I go off the suggested route, within seconds it has recalculated my corrected, /alternative route.

sometimes I have it on, but I already know where I am going, and maybe decide to go off route,and Tom knows exactly what to offer.
with most sat navs, you likely have options of which type of journey, quickest, scenic, avoiding certain roads, etc, be certain when you hit OK that IS the route you want..........else you might find, like I did once,
a suggested turnoff........down a footpath...... I had inadvertantly hit CYCLE route..

Hi Ann, I just went to have a look at OH's satnav.He thinks it is rubbish.Called Navman.Our old TomTom was the best until the sucker thing went ant we couldn't fix it on anywhere lol

Helen you CAN buy replacement mounting kits,suckers and things.....I often carry mine in my pocket......

PPs dont forget the WALKING route, on an estate it will take you right to the door..

A decent AA map and a brain. you can even download you route on the computor. and neither will get nicked from your car.**M**./

True Merlin............that's what I've been using up to now........but one of them is wearing out I think!! lol Also it was ok when you could stop at the roadside to check the detail on the route, especially in strange cities........nowadays you can't stop perhaps for a few miles if you take a wrong turn!!

Ann, go to AA routes in Britain,put in your address and your destination,and you get full directions of how to get there including speed cameras,places to stay and food halts. plus a map if required. **M**.

LOL Re maps n things........MY big problem is Glasses, I need one pair to drive with and another to read with..........

the stopping to read a map is a joke in town.......there is not often a good place TO stop.....
can u imagine how frustrating to keep swapping glasses, to read a map, then look for street names?

Catchthecat, thanks for the advice but I prefer to keep my brain active and not blindly follow Sat Navs, as is shown by Lorries etc going to wrong roads etc prove..**M**.

I agree Bob, I've done the AA routefinder way which is good if you are finding an out of town hotel, but the amount of instructions to follow to find somewhere in a city need to be reviewed as you progress and you can't stop in a city to do that.

I always put the postcode of where I'm going on google earth too before I set off. It shows you the place so you know what to look for and the way in if it is a hotel.
