Hi all,
Can any of you tell me if the gro have put up their prices for certificates please? My oh has just requested a copy of his birth cert. (he's put the original somewhere safe and can't find it)!! They charged him a tenner (I know this is cheap compared to other websites) but I thought it was seven pounds a cert?

Its £7 with the GRO ref, If he didnt know the ref then they charge an extra £3 to search for it

If he's getting charged a tenner, he's probably missed ticking the yes I do know the GRO ref numbver thing:)

If you say yes you know the ref number, then don't give it what happens then?

I've not tried it; I have never ordered a certificate without the ref numbers. I doubt you would get the certificate for £7 without it, though.

Thanks for all your replies, my oh hasn't ordered from the GRO before, and didn't know the ref. no. he needed for his birth cert, but they did say if he ordered two certs, the second one would only cost him £7, thanks again for all your replies.

If you let me know your OH's name and the month/year and place of his birth I could look it up and give you the reference numbers. It would save him £3.

Thanks for your very kind offer to look up my OH ref. no. but he's already sent off for the cert. Where can you look for this info? - just curious!

The GRO would only charge him £7 for the second cert cos they would have done the search already and got their GRO ref so they wouldn't need to search again
Ancestry has the births from 1916 -2005 fully transcribed so finding his birth would be easy peasy!!

Not sure if you have to be a member. You can see BMD's on FreeBMD for nothing but they haven't got the more recent BMD's yet.

Yes for the BMDS after 1916 you need to be a subs member on Ancestry. They carry the FreeBMD ones to 1915 although FreeBMD have gone beyond that year in transcribing .Ancestry is a sponser of FreeBMD so they work with each other and Ancestry uploads the revised FreeBMD records from time to time
