I've had cats all of my life, but I have yet to see one actually smile!
Dogs, yes. They will smile when they are having fun, but not cats - they are always on the attack, even when playing, and that takes a lot of concentration. They are very good at looking contented, though!

Yes, I was thinking something similar to BM. Was she always smiling Rose?

I've just come across a website: 'Purr-n-Fur UK' which gives some of the possible origins of the term, 'to grin like a cheshire cat'

My mum was born in Cheshire and sometimes referred to herself as a 'Cheshire Cat', I was just wondering (re Alice in Wonderland ) Why 'Cheshire cat' ....

"Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable says grinning like a Cheshire cat is "an old simile, popularised by Lewis Carroll". Brewer adds, "The phrase has never been satisfactorily accounted for, but it has been said that cheese was formerly sold in Cheshire moulded like a cat that looked as though it was grinning".[4] The cheese was cut from the tail end, so that the last part eaten was the head of the smiling cat."
