Why Change a Name!

Have uncovered an anomaly which I and nobody else seems to be able to explain, and due to lack of records will never get a definitive answer...

My Great Grandfather was born a Hemmings, in 1908 he married and used the surname Reed on his wedding certificate. To add to the confusion his parents who were both present also gave the surname Reed. After the wedding documents show that my Great Grandfather remained a Reed as did all his descendants, while his parents reverted back to Hemmings???

Some have suggested that perhaps they had bad debt but they remained in the same area and could have easily been found.

Any ideas why people seem to change their names.

Maybe he wanted to disassociate himself from someone of that name. Perhaps there was a Hemmings criminal at the time and they did not want it to appear they were of the same family!
