.....The same selfless bravery.
Yesterday the midlands saw the funeral of 2 soldiers one was 111 year old 'last Tommy' Harry Patch who had served in the trenches in WWI The other was eighteen year old Joseph Murphy who was killed in Afghanistan trying to save a wounded colleague.
One thing that Harry Patch said before he died was ''why do we fight, eventually we have to sit around a table to sort things out''

Its just so sad seeing all these young brave solider's loosing their life, in this so called war.

Perhaps the powers to be should listen to what Harry had to see and learn from what he had seen with his own eyes

Near army training here and see the young lads around, fear for them even though they are not mine,. Listened to a lady on the bus talking about her son out there, and why he says it is necessary ...no words convey the amount of respect I have for their courage. .

I have had the pleasure of my Army son visiting me at my home in Spain along with his girlfriend. Now some of you will know about him because I have posted on other boards. It was a surprise visit and quite wonderful. We did not discuss Afghanistan more than once when he said
"Mum,everyday people will disgree with what is right or wrong in being in ..........................in Afghanistan but please remember this. You always said that to be a part of a community you must belong to the community and as you get older you will realise that the world is a community. Your role is to do what you can for anyne who needs your help and to respect people for who they are and not where they come from. You taught me and my twin brother and my elder brother and sister not to be afraid of life and to make informed decisions. I have done that Mum and I am doing what I know is right, what young men and women have done for years, yes we know the danger, yes we are scared sometimes, yes it is hot, yes we need more equipment etc but we also need to be there. Now stop worrying and get in the pool and learn to swim...after all you are 63 and it is about time You faced your fear"

It brought tears to my eyes but I did not cry it was time to pay my respect to him.


I must say that I do not recall saying all this but when I spoke to his twin brother he agreed tha indeed one day when they had been rather naughty at the age of around 12 or 13 I did not shout at them but said this!!! well what else can I say. The parents and family for anyone killed protecting others must feel pride, anger and a life time with a part of their heart broken for ever. We must remember them all


I hope that this makes sense as I feel rather emotional as said son and girlfriend have gone to Barcelaon to see elder brother who lives there. They are all going out for a meal and to enjoy each others company...I am so proud of them all

Thank you for your kind words. Isn't it amazing what stays in peoples memory, I did, like most parents the best I could in bringing up my children but had absolutely no idea that something I had said would stay in their mind and have such an influence.
