We sang that at Mum's funeral.
Lots of Welsh voices, giving it their all........

Wouldn't miss it for the world. Worth every penny of the TV licence. Second only to Big Brothers Most Exciting moments.

I watched the one in Liverpool from both the Catholic and Protestant cathedrals, it talked about the building of them which I found very interesting.

Well l like it , better than some of the rubbish they put on.

I never miss it, and I love singing along to the hymns, and tonight they sang how great thou art which is my favorite hymn that we sing in church.

I do. My daughter and Grand-daughter appeared in choirs on there a few months back.

I used to watch it sometimes. I love all the great, old-fashioned, non-conformist hymns (but am a non-believer) and can still remember the words to most. However now it seems to be mostly 'happy clappy' and people's 'inspirational' stories, which I hate!

I'm a believer - church every week etc. but don't watch S of P!!

Know loads of folk who do though so it's still v. popular.

Yes, I do watch "Songs of Praise" but I don't really like Aled Jones!
The BBC are trying to make the programme appeal to younger viewers.

Pam Rhodes seems to have been sidelined.

I like ones where they went to the riverside by Kew Gardens and
also to see Ken Dodd in Liverpool.

On ITV, John Stapleton interviewed famous folk about their lives and religions before a small morning service but it was axed.

The best religious series ever for me was "Highway" with
Sir Harry Secombe. He was such a warm and compassionate man
and the show took him all over the country.

It ran from 1984 until 1992.

Meant to say that I agree with Joy about the lack of church services on tv.


I'm ok, I go to church regularly but I feel sorry for those who have been churchgoers all their lives but are now too ill or old to attend. There were many for whom watching a service on tv meant so much - they felt part of things again.


There has lately been much criticism of the BBC for their choice of Head of Religious Broadcasting.

I used to enjoy it when Flora Hird presented it, she was so sincere and funny. I also enjoyed it when they used to go and do an outside one by the seaside with all the holidaymakers singing along. Reminded me of open air services on Southsea promenade when I was little.

Yes, I watch it ,I know quite a few people who watch it. I love singing to the old hymns, not so keen on the new ones.
When you think they were written over a hundred years ago, I like to think these were the hymns my ancestors were familier with and sung in church.

I am an atheist but I always watch, or rather listen to, Songs of Praise. I don't know what it is but when hymns are sung well they are some of the most spine tingling things I have known.

To listen to a good choir, preferably Welsh, singing Bread of Heaven sends me into raptures. Its not the words, as I said I am an unbeliever, but the music and harmonising......................................wonderful.
I just switch my mind off as the preaching is going on. Sorry if that offends but thats how it is with me.

Away from Songs of Praise, to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic.......... mind blowing.

Bernie - that's how I feel! Sometimes I wonder if I'm a bit weird as I love hymns (The Old Rugged Cross leaves me in a heap), sacred music, even Gregorian chant, I also love churches but am a definite atheist.

Even though I am an atheist I believe in the forces of good and evil. There are situations where you feel really uneasy, for no reason, and other times some simple thing lifts your spirits. I know we have emotions that can be aroused by outside influences, such as good music, poetry, a lovely view, etc.

I don't believe it is God that is doing this, it is within ourselves. Having said that, I do believe that if we abide by Christian ethics, (broadly speaking), then life can be good.

Funny enough I like going into churches, not for a service but on my own and just sit in the silence and reflect how many men, women and children have been baptised, married and buried there over the centuries.
