Does anyone have a possible answer to this please? On my great grandmothers death certificate in 1915 it states that her husband, my great grandfather was George Abbott Private 20601 of the 5th Welsh, can anyone tell me what regiment this would have been please?

Could it be Welsh GUARDS?
Or perhaps Welsh FUSSILIERS?
There must be a site which could help you?

Hi Christine,

I have looked on the Ancestry site on the WW1 Medal Rolls. There are a lot of George Abbotts listed but I cannot see the number 20601.
As for the regiment, there are two possibilities: 5th Battalion, Welsh Guards. or 5th Battalion, The Welsh regiment.

Sorry I can't help more.

I would guess at the 5th Welch regiment. I served in Korea with the Welch regiment - war-times probably made up the extra battalions. Their HQ was Maindy barracks, Cardiff.

Happy days

You beat me to it Harry.
I was going to mention The Welch Regiment my dad was in this regiment in the Second World War.
