Anyone know about Master grocers/fruiterers?

Would someone who called themselves a Master grocer/ fruiterer (late 1800s early 1900s in London) probably have served an apprenticeship and are there likely to be records? I've had some experience of researching apprenticeship records but earlier on and mostly with the City Livery companies, not with this so any help would be appreciated

From what I gather, a master grocer/fruitier was one who had his own shop. :)

Thank Fi - we were wondering if that's all it was. If he'd been an apprentice we'd have got more records maybe:)

Maybe this one could see into the future and decided to call himself 'Master' just to confuse you ;-pp

I suppose that everyone who was/is self-employed is their own master.

Thanks for that link, Marion - I have had loads of useful stuff from their apprenticeship records before. This one I'm asking about is for a mate and after 1850 but although I've used the site often I've never seen that list before :) I might have to have another go through it:)

Uggers - I think there was abit more to it, than has been suggested. Like time served etc. My 2 x GT Grandad was a Master Baker, and had an apprentice. Sorry, havn't time to go into it now, as about to serve the evening meal. I would like to find more about apprentice records though.

just found this

As far as I am aware you have Apprentice, Journeyman and Master. A
Master was someone who employed and trained others. A Journeyman was
fully qualified but hired out their services and an Apprentice was
training under a Master.

The description Master was usually given to a self-employed
person or the owner/boss of a small business. So yes, Master
Grocer makes good sense.

You probably are, Cat lol

I suppose as it's London, the LMA is the best place to ask. Might have a look at the website:)

Unless it was a livery company apprenticeship and then it would be the Guildhall:)
