Plans to stop attendance allowance/care component

URGENT – ACTION/SUPPORT REQUIRED
The Shaping the Future of Care Green Paper published by the DWP and the Department of Health on 14th July sets out government plans to get rid of attendance allowance and, depending on public reaction, also leaves the way clear to end the care component of DLA.

The consultation period for the green paper ends on 13 November. If there has been no significant outcry against the plans by then, it seems very likely that whichever party is in power after the next election will seize this opportunity to cut public spending by over a billion pounds a year.

At the moment I have complete control over the way I spend the care component... it has been used to have help in for those things I am unable to do myself at the moment, but I think.... from what I am reading... that there are proposals to tweak the system, so that Social Services will decide how that money is spent for you....... in fact, it is a return to how it was before! Diabolical, really.

I mean... why should I have someone come in and insist that I need help wiping my bottom, when actually, it is help getting my clothes on, my bra done up, and basic tasks which require bending????

Where care packages are developed by Social Services... well, there is no housework, not even the washing of a dish... it is all personal care... and no-one gets a full hour, if that is what they are supposed to have... because the carers are given schedules which mean that it is impossible to get from one client to another without knocking some of the care time off the client... been there, provided the care, tried to balance the rotas! It is not the fault of the carer... most are superb... but it is all about the unrealistic targets set!!

Oh.... and guess what... if everyone had their care packages to spend as they deemed fit.... look how many care managers and co-ordinators would be out of jobs!!

Off soapbox!

Unfortunately the current benefits system is unsustainable, over complex, expensive, inefficient, unfair and managed by gordon's morons. The entire system needs to be thrown out and re-built from the ground up.

This is only a small part of the problem and whilst I can see that some may be concerned, I can't see how signing petitions will help finding the long term solution

What is needed is a proper and full debate on the subject encompassing all types of social payments, sickness, unemployment, child benefit and pensions.

While you are generally right, unless people make it known how they feel, then full debate will never come about... the powers that be will take our silence as acquiescence, and charge ahead anyway... at least by voicing concerns, we are doing something, and not rolling over and playing dead... many great reforms started with just a few little whispers, turning into shouts, and then directly challenging the status quo....

I'd rather add my name to something that is maybe the start of a little whisper, than do nothing at all

I do hope you are all spreading the word. I don't think people realise the implications of this!

Those that have signed will have had the updated e mail that is coming out each week.
