Thanks to Sue ( Ian ) checking something out for me I have finally discovered that my Mum was adopted by her cousin (x1) which makes my Uncles on that side really my 2nd cousins (x1) and my cousins now my 3rd cousins.
This means that my Gt Aunt is also my Gt Nan by adoption the person that I grew up with calling Nan is really my cousin twice removed

and my FTM is going to look a complete mess

In my ancestry, my great aunt married a guy and her aunt married his brother. Must get round to working out the relationship sometime................

That is confusing, I have found things out about my family, but what confuses me is why nobody ever talked about these things.

Did your Mum know she was adopted

Agatha yes my mum did know she was adopted and in the back of my brain from years ago I vaguely recall family being involved but Mum won' t tell me anything and hasn't had much to do with her family for years
Annie all I will do on my tree is leave mum under her birth mum with a lot of notes attached to then all

Mind it is nice to know that the Uncle I adored as a child can fit in my tree as family and not come under adopted side :-)

My Mum has found out that she was born a twin and that her twin or herself was given away and not adopted, but we do not know if she was given away or the twin, and there is no way of finding her twin as we do not know her name, and my grandmother refuses to talk.

Unless there is someone knows and will tell that is a major brick wall Agatha, at least I knew my Mums birth name and they didn't change her 1st name. I was really only working on the birth side but had located my Nans maiden name just incase there was any truth in the family link .....hey presto there it is.

We do know that mums twin lives in the Ely, Huntingdon area of cambridgeshire as mum has been mistaken for this person on many occasions and people have called her a liar when she says she is not this person, but one lady who thought mum was someone else said that she did not want to give a name but that my mum did not just look like her but you would think they were the same person.

My Mum forbid me to research her side of my tree, it was a bit late as I had already got quiet away back by then, now I just don't tell her anything. What I will do if I come up with living family I am not sure. It makes it hard for me to contact my Uncle both on the tree side and a personal side. But I have his address and a letter waiting to be posted ......it's been waiting nearly a year
if I send it I could upset Mum if I don't he may die before I ever get intouch again he has 3 children ( cousins sort of lol ) 2 I have never seen and the eldest was just a baby ( My Uncle is 17yrs younger than mum )

Agatha, Can you not look up your mother's birthdate and see who was born on the same day/place?

Susan with numbers a good idea but no doubt the name will be changed.
Maybe Agatha and her Mum should try the newspaper idea around Ely with the can anybody help. No doubt somebody may come forward with help and it could be her aunt also looking ?

Not a good idea for many security reasons...there is no knowing what weirdos are lurking waiting to pounce..

The same with the newspaper idea, unless only the smallest of details are given out.
