New web site was loading soooo slowly

Couple of months ago I started a thread about the new GR web site taking minutes (yes, up to 7 minutes!) to load a single page, although other sites were OK. Was advised to upgrade from IE6 to IE7 (no thanks, too many problems reported with upgrading IE6 to IE7) or IE8 (same).

Was going to try Firefox at that time but got delayed by need for (successful) cardiac bypass surgery.

Downloaded Firefox 3.5.2 a few days ago to try it out. What a top browser! Loads a GR tree with 1700 people in 4 seconds, never freezes, does what it's asked. And all other sites that I go to load faster even though they weren't a problem previously. So it's GOODBYE INTERNET EXPLORER, HELLO FIREFOX!

I'm with you on that one Herbert. Not very computer literate but took the plunge, now have IE8 and Firefox, brilliant.

Well done on your successful surgery too, skipping about like a 2 year old now I expect are you

Good luck

I've mentioned this before, but will do so again It is the way that you manage your temp file or internet cache that is more likely to be the problem when GR pages fail to load properly.

In order to work, GR loads web pages into your browser and if there is insufficient space available you have problems, including the ones described here.

Earlier versions of IE allocated less space by default and were not as good as managing the space either, which is why upgrading sometimes helps. It also has the effect of starting with a clean sheet, but if you don't keep your pc shipshape, the problems will return.

Out of preference I use Firefox (3.5.2 is currently the latest version) although I also have IE8 as backup. IE6 is to all intents and purposes obsolete. Yes, there were some problems originally upgrading to IE7 but these were overcome a long time ago.

Whatever browser you are using, the most important task is to clear your temp files on a regular basis. You can do this manually or like me, use a program such as CCleaner on a daily basis.

Sometimes, pressing F5 will clear the problem in the short term by reloading the current web page.

If you still have problems, especially loading trees then increase the amount of space your browser allocates for loading pages. You do this via your Browsers Tools, Options menu. (Tools Internet Options if you have IE)

Rita, clearing out her temp files worked for another member over the weekend who had similar problems to what you have described.

If you have not got CCleaner (which I too recommend) go to start menu then all programmes, then find accessories then system tools, then disc clean up, that will remove all temp files and clean up your PC.

I* don't know about your e mails Rita but your temp files need clearing more than once a month, I do mine about every 2 days and there are loads.
