On my mum's marriage certificate her father is marked as deceased. Did they have to produce a death certificate or was it just their "say so".
Please tell me they had to produce a certificate or I will cry, because I will never find him!
Thank you

No you do not and did not have to produce a death certificate. At least you know he died before the marriage, many do not have deceased on them.

Sometimes people lied. If the person getting married needed parental consent because they were under 21 and didn't have it, they sometimes said the father was deceased even if he wasn't - just to complicate things further for you!!!

Thanks Gail,
Do you think someone would be daring enough to lie and say he was deceased? This is 1951. I know I couldn't but...............
Something is niggling me with this one. I was hoping to definitely pin the dod down to 1947-1951. Not easy as Grandfather is John Smith and cannot find him in local records office.
I will have to visit the records office again, just in case he died in hospital and I expect it would have the City where the hospital is and not his local area.
Thank you again for the reply.
