Having taken my dad to the Spinnaker Tower this week I thought it might be a good idea to pass on things we might have discovered about disabled access to places.

Spinnaker Tower/Gunwharf Quays/Blue Boat Trips

There is no parking at Gunwharf for any vehicle over 7'3".
The only way to take a mini-bus is to discharge passengers at the other end of Gunwharf to the Spinnaker and park the vehicle in the street,Museum Road is the one they tell you about. This can prove to be a fair walk when it is busy.
Carers with wheelchairs go in free.
It is better to book in a wheelchair as only one is allowed at a time.
The Blue Boat trips around Portsmouth Harbour are well worth doing but will not allow electric wheelchairs aboard.

Imperial War Museum.

Grandson had an op. last September which meant he was in a wheelchair for a few months.
We arranged to take him to the Imperial War Museum and phoned for advice re. parking.
The staff couldn't have been more helpful. They told us we could park in the grounds and access through a certain door. When we arrived, there was our place reserved with bollards and a helpful member of staff to show us in.

After our visit, but before leaving, they asked grandson if he had seen the trenches exhibition. We hadn't, so staff walked with us back to that area and showed us where to access with the wheelchair.

10 out of 10 for advice, service and helpfulness.

wheelchair access (and also pushchair access for those of us with babies) is SO much better than it used to be as it is now law for establishments to make any reasonable adaptations to improve accessibility, most attractions will detail special access provisions on their websites

Good idea Sharron.
A thread with some advice like this for wheelchair users is a great help.
Anyone else with any knowledge?
