Name collector caught out?

In the early years of my GR family tree, I opened it to whoever asked, but all of them (except one) only seemed to take what they needed to get them over any brick walls. The one took some chasing up, but I finally got her to remove my living relatives - this, after I realised that I could hide them, which I did.

However, I have had my doubts about that 'one' and I believe that they might have been a name collector and took more names than they needed, and now perhaps has opened their tree to another name collector. This one person had their own website for a while and boasted about having thousands of relatives ALL OVER THE WORLD! So what?

And I thought I had it all sorted now that I don't open my tree for anyone. I'll give them all the info they want on ONE person in my tree - but NO ACCESS!

Suemaid, who knows. I know he had part of my maternal family in it, even though the link was rather tenuious. I think he married a fourth cousin, or something lie that. But, it is alright having all these names, and not knowing anything about the persons. My tree isn't all that big at the moment, I have come to a stumbling block and waiting for some paid search results to arrive, but, I do know about the people contained therein. I like abit of meat on the bones, it makes them seem more human, rather than just a number. Also, if someone asks to see my tree, I always say it is in boxes,in me head, and is a work in progress, none of which is a lie, but if they want to know about anybody, just ask. They soon become disinterested.

I know someone on here who has over 50,000 names in his tree, and still counting, and yes I have seen it. What the heck does someone need with all those names.???

That happened to me a while back, Berona. Someone asked if an ancestor of mine was related to her. The name was Thomas Williams. I said that her Thomas's wife's name was different from my Thomas's wife. She asked if she could see my tree and I foolishly opened the tree for her. Never heard from her again. Then one day I was searching for an ancestor and I found him on this person's tree. The ancestor was unrelated to my Williams's and as she had opened her tree to me I had a look. She had taken all my ancestors and put them on her tree. Her tree is totally wrong.

I would wonder if that was the case, but I have done my own tree (Dad's) back to nearly 1600 and I've also done my OH's tree back to 1569 and there are definitely no connections anywhere.

OH's ancestor was born in 1794 and I've already covered that time. Certainly no-one from MY ancestry involved!

Had the same my families Polish and Norwegian connections seemed to be on his tree but looking closely it was innocent as he had a Polish ancestor related into my wife's family

I received my Hot Matches to-day and amongst them was one person with 9 names matching those in my tree.

Eight of the names referred to my Dad's grandmother's family whilst ONE matches my OH's great/great grandfather. My own ancestors and my OH's ancestors weren't even in the same country and have never been associated with each other until he and I married.

I have sent a message asking how this person can possibly be related to both of us. Wonder if I'll get a reply?
