Hi Frances, what you say is in fact what should happen regarding a reminder, but with me it didn't happen, it was by chance I looked at my licence and saw it only had 7 days left, on contacting DVLA as to why I hadn't heard, the answer I got was "It happens" thats why my advice is to keep a check on when its due to run out, as it appears they can't be relied on. F.

Your photocard driving licence has an expiry date printed on it , underneath date of birth. It needs renewing every 10 years - I've just done mine. They send you a renewal form automatically a few weeks before, so remember to inform DVLA if you've moved in the last 10 years, otherwise it will go to the wrong address!

and,
without being nosy, about your "Certain age" ..........you MUST be under 70!!

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will send you a renewal application pack two months before your photo is due to expire. You’ll need to:

complete the enclosed form
include a new passport type photo of yourself that’s been taken within the last month - you don’t need the back of the photo signed
return both the photocard and counterpart of your licence - if you have lost one or both parts you can still use this application
enclose a cheque or postal order for £20.00 -


) no fee is needed if you have a medical short period licence or you’re aged 70 or over (


send your application and fee to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DH

Not so Bob, just had to replace mine., and being of a certain age it only lasts for a year. F.

I think I will hang on to my old styled one for now.I do get a bit embarrassed when I get asked for ID and I drag out this tatty old thing which for some reason has a bit of my daughters hair under the plastic cover .It was when she first had it cut,she is 26 now lol

although thats basically correct, methinks that it really only applies to the younger drivers, as their features may change drastically with maturity, us older 'uns may get away without renewing the photo.......

Just to add a bit of extra info for those who already have a photo licence, keep a check of the date it was issued to you, as it is a legal rquirement that photocard licences are updated with a new photo every Ten Years. If you fail to do this it could cost you a £1000 fine.

your old paper only driving licence will be valid until the day before you are 70.unless it has medical restrictions.
You will only have to replace it if you i move home ii change your name iii have other vechicle restrictions.
Once you have the new licence then you have to renew it and at the moment it is 20£ but that WILL go up.
Tip dont move, dont change your name !

Do I have to change my old paper driving licence
for the photo one
Sister has just had a reminder to renew her photo and it costs
£20 ......so can I stick with my old one
