Marriages in a register Office 1850's

I was going to say, perhaps they weren't religious? Or were of different faiths or perhaps were not particularly fervent believers in any particular branch of a faith? |

Maybe Non. Catholic/ Catholic not approved of by Catholic Church, because Non Catholic did not convert to Catholic Faith? |

I'm trying to find out why a marriage would take place in a registry office instead of a church. I have just recieved a marriage certificate from 1854 of some relatives, but it states that their marriage took place in a register office (In Truro) which i thought rather odd. Can anyone shed any light? Thanks |
