I don't want to take over proper remembrance threads. Saw an article on the wearing of poppies in remembrance. They were discussing that people are wearing different size poppies theses days.

I remember years ago it was unusual if you got a leaf with your poppy. These days it seems the norm.

I've noticed that there are many different poppies these days.

You can get traditional paper ones with pins or even to stick on now, you can also get stickers, I think I've seen big ones too. This year I bought a small clip on poppy as I'm always losing my paper poppy and stabbing myself with pins. It's really pretty & shows my support.

I was wondering whether they still have Haig in the middle of Poppies?

Just had a look at my paper one and the center of the poppy says " Poppy Appeal "

Thank you Blue Moon. I had a feeling they may have changed it as Haig was quite controversial.

I still have the paper and normally off a vetran, always have a little chat with them, as I reconise the cap badge and tell them my granddad was in the same regiment and my son was and saved this country single handed, ...

going off topic abit here, when son marched through our town, the vetrans did as well with them, I was watching as the that must of been the srg gave them orders, he said " right lads " Lads I had a giggle not one of the was under 70 I thought it was very sweet... lol

That's lovely Hayley :) Obviously those veterans wanted to show their respect.

I think this year more than most, I think it has hit home that there's a lot of families that have recently lost young men/women in conflict and we shouldn't forget about them either.

You've also reminded me. I must look at old photographs and check the regiments etc. thanks

My hubby did 23 years in the army and always wore his poppy behind his cap badge. He did 8 tours of Northern Ireland and a couple of years ago they issued a Northern Ireland veterens badge with the Silver Bugle on it, ( Hubby was Light Infantry, now the Rifles) He now wears his poppy behind his vets badge on his uniform for work and is very proud of the fact that he served his country.

Joan,
you have just solved a puzzle that had been bugging me for a few days. I saw someone the other day with 4 petals and wondered where it came from. I usually buy 2 poppies and put them together as I like the double effect. Have any of you noticed that several people recently have been wearing a jewelled poppy brooch? They look really nice.

I've got a little metalled pin type poppy. Bought it in Belgium the week before last when we visited Vimy Ridge. The site is maintained by the Canadians so the background of my little badge is a maple leaf with the poppy in front of it. Quite tiny compared to the paper ones but it's very sweet.

Feel proud to wear it as OH's grandfather fought for Canada in WW1 and it was because of him and my research on him that we went on the battlefields tour. I think OH is even beginning to "get the bug" about the family research too.

When we were in Battle, East Sussex last week, I saw a huge poppy on the front of a coach, - at least 12 to 15 inches across.
The brooch ones sold out quickly round here. Daughter has one, but I stick to the more usual kind.
My late Mum always kept her poppy after Remembrance Day and tucked it in a little vase beside my Dad's photo. He came home from the war, but lost his cousin at sea on HMS Perth. Mum had 'silk' poppies there, in a spray. It was interesting to see how the style had changed over the years.
She always bought another poppy each year.
