Storage of Parish Registers during WW2

I have been asked by an American friend; where did they store parish registers during WW2 and were a lot or any destroyed.

I have to confess I couldn't tell him the answer. Was this the time that registers were filmed to preserve them for future generations? Were they stored in a vault in London?

Obviously a lot of registers were still in the churches but what about the really ancient ones?

They have to keep the registers in special cabinets these days to preserve them.

I know a parish that has spent a lot of money on one of these cabinets so they can hang on to the registers and charge for look ups :-(

I was wondering, though, when was it that they decided to put the archived registers on microfilm for safety.
