all the 'formerly tells you is ''was once'' not any indication how marriage ended they could have died or they divorced

The maiden name will be listed against the birth reference on Ancestry provided it's later than 1911.

CHEERS that helps me ... should be able to sort now - will get copy of marriage certificate and i might be able to read that one - looks like from what you all say i need that to get her maiden name - then you never know i might find out who her first hubby was (if i can read it!!) and judge time periods etc etc .....

I have a certificate saying the "late" but cant find where her hubby died but he was ment to in the first 18months of marriage ,...

The marriage cert would help as it should show her father's name, which is usually the maiden name (unless of course he was her stepfather but let's not go down that road!)

I would say Shelton was her first married name. When they say 'late' it probably means she was widowed. Formerly usually applies to Maiden names.

Usually it's:

Mary Storey (2nd married name), late Wareham (first married name - first husband had died), formerly Ward (maiden name).

I have a birth certificate which gives the mothers surname as 'late Shelton then formerly something i cannot make out' who is the mother of my father and married name Hooley, at the time of his birth. Which of the late and formerly would be her maiden name and would the other be a previous married name - which is which ?????
