I managed to get through to my old bosses who retired to Keswick, this morning.

Both their house (again) and their ground floor flat that they let out have been flooded but they are OK.

I feel so sorry for them and impotent to help.

Just seen the photos of the bridge at our timeshare (Backbarrow) we wondered if it would hold it is a very old bridge by what used to be a paper mill and then a Dolly blue factory. See:

I've been thinking about Caz too. Glad she is ok (Thank you for posting this).
Hope Summer Scribe is ok too.

My thoughts with those affected by these floods.

its all very sad, the poor policemen just doing his job and all the peoples homes and businesses devastated. We live in a village near Carlisle and we have all been cut off because of flooding on the road as we are near the Eden but everyones houses are secure and so we all know how lucky we have been.

Teddys Girl Report 21 Nov 2009 16:34

So very sad for the Policeman, and Condolences to his family.

Why people want to go sightseeing when there is danger beggars belief. I have seen on our local TV, where people are watching waves come over the sea wall, and dashing out of the way just before the water hits them. So very stupid.

I feel so sad for the policeman's family, and it will be awful today when they should be celebrating his birthday and instead have to be arranging his funeral. No one would expect a sturdy bridge to just disappear would they, despite there being some cracking occuring. May he rest in peace, he was just doing his job and wouldn't have expected such a thing to happen. I hope he was not conscious for long so didn't realise what was happening, poor chap.

I watched the tv footage with sympathy for all those who have been affected. It was only the other day I was reading a novel set in the area in Cumbria, and near the end there was an horrendous storm which caused rivers to overflow and a farm was washed away and a man drowned (it was set in the 1800s)

I hope Liz is ok with her family, and glad Caz is ok.

Thinking of everyone affected by these terrible floods, their families elsewhere who are worrying about them.

My heart goes out to the family of the Policeman who drowned; it's his birthday tomorrow, God bless him ... Thinking too of his friends and colleagues.

So pleased Polly Poppet let you know Caz is okay, I chat with her on F'bk and she is thank goodness.

Thinking of your son Mary in Spain, hoping the river will subside soon. xxx

The worst thing about the poor policeman is he appears to have been there because of sight see-ers on the bridge, getting them to stay off.

BrianW Report 20 Nov 2009 15:59

Terrible news that a policeman has drowned whilst helping others avoid the dangers of the floods.

So sorry for his family and hoping my son never has to put himself in that sort of danger. (Although I do know that he went on board the hijacked plane at Stansted when they weren't sure whether there were explosives on there a few years ago).

So glad Caz is ok - hope everyone in Cumbria stays safe. Had an email off our eldest son last night - he lives in Ambleside- Said he was shoclked yesterday morning seeing the river at the bottom of his drive. He cycled to work and the boss let him go early before it got dark. He did say that lake Windermere was on the road in places- Hope it all clears up as in 2 weeks time I am going there visiting him.
Love Mary xx

AnninGlos Report 20 Nov 2009 09:24

Sending my thoughts to Caz and Summer Scribe. I am pretty sure that caz is not in the worst areas affected but not sure about Summer Scribe. I couldn't believe my eyes seeing Keswick on the news, and Burneside as well. I am wondering of Backbarrow is OK, that is where our timeshare is and it is right beside the River Leven. Hopefully most of the people will be fine there as they live on a steep hill, but there are cottages down by the river so i am thinking of those people.
