The real reason you're fat: How extra weight could be down to stress
By Daily Mail Reporter
08th December 2009

We identify the medical explanations for weight gain.
Weight to go: Stressful episodes can cause you to gain weight
STRESS What happens: Stressful episodes can cause your body to go into survival mode: your metabolism slows down, more calories are stored (for fuel) and cortisol and leptin - the stress hormones - are dumped in the abdominal region, adding to weight gain.
The waist-expanding effect of stress was recently confirmed by a study published in the American Journal Of Epidemiology.

The researchers also found that women's waistlines were affected by more types of stress than men's; as well as money and job problems, women's weight was inflamed by relationship difficulties and feeling trapped in their lives.
Warning signs: Craving carbohydrate foods such as pasta, crisps and chocolate can be a sign that someone is stressed.

These foods increase levels of the brain chemical serotonin, which has a calming effect on mood.
What to do: Stress reduction and relaxation techniques, such as meditation and yoga, can be helpful.

Dr Eric Asher, a GP and medical director of The Third Space fitness club in London, says regular exercise is the best approach, as it not only reduces stress by increasing levels of feelgood hormones (endorphins), but also burns calories.

Sorry to come back to my own personal gripe but I have said for some time that I believe the increase in childhood obesity is linked to the rise in Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Some of us, many of whom, like myself, are fat, can testify to the huge stress that the children of these people live under.

Yes, some children, my cousin's victim son for instance, don't seem to grow much and others of us gorge. I wonder if it something to do with how we deal with trouble. Eating to be strong to fight it or not eating to disappear from it.

Just a thought.

I have found another site on Google about daughters of narcissistic mothers. That is worth a look.

If there is a link between stress and weight gain then I really ought to weigh 20 stone.

I eat like a horse, worry about stuff and am a size 6!

No logic to it really. I always thought it was to do with brown fat cells.

Look, you were strong enough to live it because you had to be.Now, you be strong enough to read it through the tears.Did you read the article I cited on that thread?

It rips your guts out but you need to do it.
I cried and felt like I had been wrung out for some time afterwards but I am very, very glad I did.

Well I am not stressed (well rarely) and yet am overweight so what is my problem? Lack of exercise I am sure and maybe a little too much alcohol.

WW you do know that the only thing for Plantar fasciitis is to rest the foot don't you? Not to walk on it. That was the advice for my OH from my chiropodist.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 9 Dec 2009 17:55

One thing that helped my OH was to fill a bottle with water and let it get really cold in the fridge, then to roll his foot across it. And he also bought some gel inserts for his shoes from Boots, it says they are for PF.

Interesting points on here.

My fm is a nuisance and I have osteo arthritis in both knees and one big toe! and I am sure it is in my ankles too I also have it in my neck and shoulders. When I was diagnosed with fm the specialist just said come and see me again if you need to, what's the point? - they don't do much for us do they? It's the bad sleep with fm that is the worst part of it as far as I am concerned and now with chronic fatigue syndrome which again there is nothing to help me, I struggle to get through each day, doing as much or as little as I can. I too did heavy work, moved furniture alone, carried heavy shopping - no car for some years from when my son was 10, did lots of the swearword to make money to do up the house, etc etc

I try hard to eat healthily but my Mum brought me up on a very sugary diet (I was born when rationing was still in so when it stopped Mum could get sugar etc easily and made cakes and sweet things) which is a hard habit to get out of altho I do my best and rarely make or buy cakes or biscuits.

I found I was really waddling but that apparently is a sympton of vit d deficiency - had the jab recently but it doesn't seem to have given me any more energy or helped much, not sure if I am still waddling lol
Maybe my board name should be Jemima Puddleduck!

If only I could just smooth some of the fattest bits away, my apple tum mainly and the double chin etc
Oh to have an airbrush that worked like that!

WW I am a chocoholic too, as was my Mum!

I was diagnosed by a rheumatologist at our local hospital, on the NHS - can't remember why my doctor suspected fm now, it's so long ago, I was in my early fifties at the time.

Maybe you should talk to your doctor about the waddling and vit d if you are told to keep out of the sun.

I used to think years ago that all my older friends that I looked after never got outside but would sit indoors on the nicest of days, instead of going to sit out in the garden so must be lacking in vit d. but always told myself I wouldn't be like that. Then I got this chronic fatigue thing after the fm started and realised I wasn't seeing daylight let alone sunlight, if there was any which is rare these days lols, so probably low in vit d myself.
Just wish the jab had helped and given me some energy again.

Off back to bed, only had a few hours but the phone woke me and I came down for a drink, made the fatal mistake of turning the computer on and here I still am. O.h. due home at 4.30pm so will go back and watch tv till I snooze then can get a cuppa brought up to wake me when he comes in.

Thanks yes I did! O.h. got home from work at 4.30pm and altho I had told him I wanted to go out shopping, he thought as I was asleep he wouldn't wake me, I finally surfaced at 5 to 6pm!! Wasn't too chuffed with him as I had things to do. He had started doing something in the garage and forgotten about me lol

My late Mum used to say a squeaking gate goes on the longest so I guess that's me and others here, hope you can go and have a good moan in the spring, at your doctor or maybe a new one will have joined and they might be more useful.

take care folks,

LIzx
