I have just come back online and GR tells me that I have an outdated browser, and I should upgrade to a modern one. I suppose they will be telling me to wash my face and brush my hair and get dressed, next.

They offer a choice of firefox 3.5, internet explorer 8, safari 4, and google chrome. Any suggestions as to which is best, not to mention easy and quick to download (or should that be upload)?

I cant say I have noticed any problems with my computer.

Huia.

I have just had the same appear on my screen when I signed in,
I deleted it.
Click on the x on the right hand corner.
My computer is fine as well.

I got same message - as I'm using a "works" p.c. I don't have administrator rights to download programmes so I just clicked on the X to cancel it. Can't say I've noticed any difference

If you actually want to download one both google chrome and firefox are good.

Thanks for that everybody. I will just play 'wait and see'. If I start to have problems I might change browsers, but in the meantime.......

Can anybody tell me how I can update my AVG free to version 9? I cannot see anything to click on for the free version. Is there no longer going to be a free version?

Huia, who is not too well up on these computer things.

I upgraded to IE8 this evening - and lost my internet connection!!!

Eventually managed to connect - but that was after 5 hours, and an expensive and (as usual) useless phone call to my internet provider (tiscali for those of you interested in useless providers!!)

I've had the same message as well

Just as I've been having a similar message on ancestry for months and months!

I did not want to upgrade to IE7 or 8 because of all the problems

................. so I downloaded Mozilla/Firefox for free. It was easy, but has taken me some time to really learn how to sue it.

I use Mozilla for ancestry and for family tree forum, and will keep IE6 for everyhting else as long as I can!

First choice for me is Firefox - current version is 3.5.7

Internet Explorer 8 is also absolutely fine. Some were understandably reluctant to upgrade because of reported problems when IE7 was first introduced in 2006, but these issues were resolved long ago, so go ahead and upgrade with confidence.

Thanks for the replies while I was shopping, or having dinner, or just not connected as there was a thunderstorm (I try to disconnect, and unplug when there is thunder around, just to play safe).

I have a couple of busy days ahead of me so might leave any upgrade until Sunday.

I have been using Google Chrome for a while. It is very quick and efficient. BC¬XX

How long should E8 take to install ?

I tried yesterday (after getting the message) and 2 hours later it was still "installation in progress"

I cancelled !!

For AVG 9 Free Huia go to the Avg.com page select the download tab

Then go right to the bottom of the page and the second item up is the Free Version 9 Download.

Actually if you read all of Huia's posts (on page one) she did ask about AVG.

Morning:o)

l had/have problems for quite a while now and asked GR if they could help, they suggested l downloaded IE8, l still get the probs every now and then, l've even deleted AVG9 and installed it again, that worked for a few days, but same probs occur every now and then:o((

jude :o)

Edited....must add l also had the message when l came on gr this morning!

I also got the message bar suggesting to upgrade to a new browser & I already have IE8..........So I reckon this message bar comes up on everyones screen, whether they have upgraded or not.

Another possible reason for this (& I'm only speculating here). Is if GR plan not to support earlier browsers.

To check what browser you're using.
Go to the top of the screen.......Click on Help...... Then in the list provided, Click on "About (browser name) "........ This will show what version of the browser your using.

Thank you all, again.

Thanks to Steve, I have now found that I am on IE7. As I said in my reply to IceBaby's PM, I am off out for the day, so will have to deal with it tonight (that is, in about 12 hours). I cant afford to wait hours for it to download this morning or I will never get out.

I also replied to a PM re my AVGfree.

Ice Baby

you really do not need to keep repeating your warning

................ we can all read the first warning!

I have seen nothing about this on this side of the Atlantic ......... and I really wonder how true your email was. Or was it just another scam from somewhere?

In fact, having a program such as AVG should help in protecting your computer against a virus from any source, including IE6.

Ice

I was just objecting to the NUMBER of times I was reading your warning ... guaranteed to cause panic.

Yes, I agree the warning would help ....... but it only needed posting once, not repetitively on the same thread.

Re the "email" ......... I did not mean an email to me, I meant the email (or whatever other way you received it) that gave you the information.

The fact remains ............. I have seen nothing in the news on this side of the Atlantic! I would presume that it would have been first page news!
