It can be easy to blame your browser, when the real problem lies elsewhere.
The latest version of AVG appears to be very resource hungry and can slow your computer down to a crawl. At times browsing was a nightmare. I mentioned this to my son some weeks ago and he advised me to remove it altogether, as he and all his friends and work colleagues have done. Result is that the PC runs noticeably faster - I would say at least twice as fast in my case.
I now use Microsoft Security Essentials and my main security package. It is free and runs in the background without taking over. I also have Avira Antivirus installed too and run Spybot about once a week. Malawarebytes is another good program to have on your PC , especially if you think you have a spyware infection.

There aren't any problems with IE8 or IE7 for that matter. Initial rollout issues with IE7 were resolved nearly three years ago.....!
There are problems with continuing to use IE6, though, it is no longer considered as secure as the later IE releases and support from Microsoft is in name only. Most websites have already, or shortly will, stop supporting it for new webpages.. Another problem with not upgrading is that even if you use another browser, the program code within IE is in use most of the time running in background, and your PC may not be performing at its best, plus there is the security weakness that hit the headlines a few weeks back.
I prefer Firefox as my default browser and have used it now for the best part of five years.. The current version is 3.6 I have IE8 installed as well, but rarely use it as a browser.
Obviously down to the individual, but in not upgrading now you might be storing up problems for the future - who knows.

GR has just started posting that "outdated browser" message to me again ............. a couple of days ago!
I don't care ...... I have good protection, and am happy with IE6 and Mozilla Firefox.

Jean and IIB, I did later in the thread mention that I was unable to install the latest version of AVGfree, but my nephew has installed it for me. I had to take my computer to his place as I cannot get broadband here and it was much too slow on dial-up.
I have also installed mozilla firefox but I dont use it at present and have not had the 'outdated' message for some time from GR, even though I am still using IEwhatever it was.

Hi Can i stick my nose in and add my 4p worth. According to what was said on Working Lunch' someone has decided that Microsoft have an unfair advantage as most manufacturers automaticly install IE on new computers so everyone is going to recieive these messages giving them an option to change Browsers if they want to. I have received a drop down menu with various other names i can use instead of IE. i looked upon it as 'better the devil you know' having only ever use IE for a number of years.

Linux has a bad reputation over here
I still have IE6, prefer it to IE7, have not tried IE8 because I don't want the problems.
Had an automatic update of IE6 earlier this week, with the security patch.
I do have Mozilla/Firefox ................... but strangely enough I prefer what you so nicely call the "outdated" IE6 for many of the sites I search. On many occasions it's actually faster than Mozilla/Firefox. Strange that?!
Not that I like being called outdated :))))

Hi all, My advice is do not upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 as most of the problems have not been resolved. It is far slower than IE7 in every department and still causes crashes and has many other very annoying and frustrating little problems that will drive you to do as I and many thousand others have done, that is to uninstall it and go back to IE7. It is that bad that Microsoft have even given pages of advice on how to uninstall and revert to IE7. Proof enough for me.
All the best arysto

so still no news in the papers, on radio, etc etc
googling I found this, issued 1 hour ago by Reuters
SEATTLE, Jan 21 (Reuters) -
Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) on Thursday released a patch to protect users of its Internet Explorer browser from attacks similar to those directed at Google Inc's (GOOG.O) operations in China last week.
The world's largest software company, which acknowledged that a weakness in its browser was exploited by hackers targeting Google and at least 20 other companies in China, said its new patch was "critical" and should be applied as soon as possible.
The patch resolves eight vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer, the most serious of which could allow hackers to gain control of a computer remotely via Web sites visited while using the browser, Microsoft said.
Most Internet Explorer customers, who have automatic updating enabled on their system, will not need to take any action, Microsoft said. For manual updating, it directed users to its website
so the major attack was on Google and other companies in China .................. and the patch will be installed automatically if you have automatic updating.
So ....... yes, a thank you for alerting us to the warning, Ice-Baby
My posting was never against you warning us, it was about continuous repetition on the same thread!

I was just objecting to the NUMBER of times I was reading your warning ... guaranteed to cause panic.
Yes, I agree the warning would help ....... but it only needed posting once, not repetitively on the same thread.
Re the "email" ......... I did not mean an email to me, I meant the email (or whatever other way you received it) that gave you the information.
The fact remains ............. I have seen nothing in the news on this side of the Atlantic! I would presume that it would have been first page news!

Ice Baby
you really do not need to keep repeating your warning
................ we can all read the first warning!
I have seen nothing about this on this side of the Atlantic ......... and I really wonder how true your email was. Or was it just another scam from somewhere?
In fact, having a program such as AVG should help in protecting your computer against a virus from any source, including IE6.

Thank you all, again.
Thanks to Steve, I have now found that I am on IE7. As I said in my reply to IceBaby's PM, I am off out for the day, so will have to deal with it tonight (that is, in about 12 hours). I cant afford to wait hours for it to download this morning or I will never get out.
I also replied to a PM re my AVGfree.

I also got the message bar suggesting to upgrade to a new browser & I already have IE8..........So I reckon this message bar comes up on everyones screen, whether they have upgraded or not.
Another possible reason for this (& I'm only speculating here). Is if GR plan not to support earlier browsers.
To check what browser you're using. Go to the top of the screen.......Click on Help...... Then in the list provided, Click on "About (browser name) "........ This will show what version of the browser your using.

For AVG 9 Free Huia go to the Avg.com page select the download tab
Then go right to the bottom of the page and the second item up is the Free Version 9 Download.
