Do not forget to check for the road/street being renumbered or even renamed

thanks Helen, trade directories that might be a good start. Sometimes your mind goes a blank as to where to start. Thanks again.

Hi Christine, our house is originally over 200 years old; when we bought it we asked the building society to copy the deeds for us, which they did.....all the way back to 1952 which was the sum total. I have found previous owners from each census and also from the trade directories so I know who lived here up to the 1920s and then from 1952.

You could also trawl through parish records if you are in a small enough place. I was checking Medway baptisms circa 1868 a while back and there were addresses for lots of the babies. That's all I can think of for now!

I suppose it depends on when?

Electoral rolls - for most of the last century to now.

Further back - you might find some info on tithe maps - and there is a list of landowners from about 1780ish - copy at the Record Office local to the area.

Old maps? I know at my local library they have quite detailed maps from late 1890 early 1900s and some of the properties have names against them, although they might be the names of the builders.

I am sure there are other ways ...

Does anyone know of a website other than Land registry, where you can find who use to live in a property.

thanks
