The problem with setting yourself a target is that once you reach that generation, there's always a hint of the next one back...just a name, but then you start wanting to know who they were...then you discover another little titbit...and you're off again LOL.

I tend to put some generations away for a few months, or even a year, then search all over again. You'll be surprised how much new information is put up on the net in that time that can be really useful.

I go back as far as i can verify the link . Am in the early 1700,s for some of the family but stuck at 1891 on paternal side cos grandfather was German, AND on mums paternal side her grandfather only appears on the 1881 census and dies in 1884 aged 37 NO birth or previous census although know the name of his dad from the 1870 marriage cert.
So for me its find out ANY info and add it to the tree

I'm stuck on a marriage in 1739. Finding that was okey, but cannot find bride's dob, so do not know her age, or her true parentage. Nor can I find what happened to her children after the marriage, although I found the groom had died 1753. Where did all this family go to. Wonder if I will ever find out. Ah well, keep looking

I've got up to the fifth generation complete, which takes me back to 1770 ish.
But my grannies were related, so share the same roots, apart from being a generation different. That particular line goes way, way back. Others I've got back to before 1700, you can just be lucky.

I work on all branches so it's a wide tree. I promised myself I would get all branches back to 1800-1840 ish as a lot of that info I can find online.

I have one major gap as my grandfather (1884) is not registered nor, as far as I can see at the moment, baptised. So that's really annoying.

I also have second cousins marrying which makes one part of the tree look a bit odd.

But, what I try to do to as many of my direct ancestors as possible is to find out about their lives, the areas they were born in and lived in, the work they did etc etc. So I can plod away at one branch with the social history side while I plug away at the gap caused by my grandfather in the meantime.

And at some stage I will take the branches back as far as I can. Some I've already managed to do ... others will either be impossible or take a lot longer.

I guess the answer is as far as we can or as far as we want to. No definite answer on this one I think.

Hi all,

Im trying to decide how far to go back with my tree and was wondering how many generations back other people had gone?

I had originally planned 8-10 generations but im having troubles with my Irish quarter of my tree... as in i have found nothing!? Aswell as that I have one of the English quarters with a few illigitimate children. Which is making my tree look very sprase the further back I go!

I think if i went for 6 generations id have the 3 English quaters near enough complete, so it wouldnt look quite so bare, but it doesnt seem very far back!

How do you know when to stop??? Lol....
