Does anyone know if there's any relevance to the registration number *not* being crossed out next to the name of a child in the birth indices who was given up for adoption ?

Is that how you identfie an someone who has been adopted then on the birth register? I have heard that when people have tried to to buy a copy of the cert they cant because the person has been adopted and that the birth will be registered twice birth name and family name, 2 of cousins were adopted and I was passed their DOB I couldn't bare to check it as I felt I was very sensitve issued and as they are in their 50's and still alive an intrusion.

Hayley, most of the adoptees I know have a normal number in the indices and it's then crossed out and a new number handwritten in. I don't know if there are any problems about getting certs though - I've only ever bought one and just walked into St Catherine's House and bought it.

From the 1960s to early 80s you spot the adoptions because the page number ends in /S. They can be handwritten or typed.

It's amazing how many adoptions you can see.
