Maybe if Jane remarried, the children were known by the new surname, even if they didn't change officially.
When Jane died as Mrs STOYLES, ...birth father absent, maybe Bernard entered an orphanage as STOYLES, or even RYAN..,his siblings surname....?

The CWGC person is a John:
Name: John E Robertshaw Regiment or Corps: West Yorkshire Regimental Number: 14161
so Joseph is still unaccounted for.

That looks a good possibility (for death of Joseph).
Wouldn't Agnes have married as Agnes Ryan, her birth name?
Only the certificate would possibly tell.
There are three possible marriages for Agnes Ryan up to 1930, one in 1928 and two in 1930.
Not posting because of possible living relatives.

Well done Choccy.
So 1911 suggests Joseph is not around and perhaps hasn't been for a while, judging by childrens' ages.
Sarah
Birth of Bernard would show his mother as a married woman and he would therefore be registered in that surname, even if Joseph wasn't the father. Any chance of viewing his possible baptism record, which may show more information ?

Still searching for my grandfathers family.
His mother was Jane Elizabeth Ryan married to Joseph Edward Robertshaw living in Bradford. Janes parents were William and Mary Ryan from Ireland and the whole family worked within the woolen mills from what we have gathered so far Jane being a Worsted Drawer. My grandfather Bernard was born in 1913 and had a sister but I have no information as to whether she is older or younger or even what her name might have been (although an aunt remembers my grandfather talking about an Agnus)
The problem i have is that on my Grandfathers birth certificate the fathers name and occupation are blank. I know his mother Jane was married as she is listed as Robertshaw formerly Ryan.
My grandfather and his sister were orphaned and we have no idea why. Everything we were told by him has turned out to be untrue. He told us he was taken into a Bernardos home but I have undertaken searches with them and other homes in the country who have no record of him at all. We believe that because of his mental health (he suffered with Schizophrenia) he may have been taken into a mental institution but have no idea of how to begin this search as his life started in Bradford but ended in Brentford, London.
Any links, information or help is greatfully recieved!!
Thanks Sarah
