Why dont' you put it on Direct Debit and spread the cost through the year Stray. It's the only way I can afford to run any heating here.

Julia

Julia Report 15 Feb 2010 11:53

Stray Babes, but mine was only £10 more than yours, and mine has never been off all winter. Some nights I have had it on through the night.
Maybe we should have a whip round for you. All donations gratefully received.LOL

That's another good point. It's more economical to turn it down to about 18, and run it all day. That way it's not fighting to heat from cold twice a day.

Turn it down, not off.

I used to do that when I had my first central heating, but it didn't cost any more to run it lower all day.

Teresa

I did that last year & had a near £400. bill

Julia

Julia Report 15 Feb 2010 11:58

Agree with TW. I keep telling me Dad this, but he will keep turning off when he goes out, then on when he comes in. This takes more power to get to optimum temperature. But these old Dad's, you can't tell them nowt.

OMG Julie, you sure there wasn't something wrong?

I ran 7 radiators, and had it on twice a day at 20, and my first bill was around £150 (i'm talking 20 years ago)

I kept them on but turned the thermo down to 18, only going off last thing at night, back on 6.00am, and the next winter quarter bill was about £155. It really didn't make much difference but we were warmer with a steady temp in the house.
If we were out for the day, then I would turn it right down to 16, just enough to take the chill off the air, but not so much the heating wouldhave to work really hard to warm the place up when I got back in.

I did wonder at 1st Teresa but there wasn't, my Cousin lives 4 door away from me & hers was the same

This was this time last year when the price of gas had shot up, and i must admit to being a bit scared of doing that again in case the same thing happens as i really can afford it

AnninGlos Report 15 Feb 2010 12:16

We have ours going off for about 4 hours in the day and off all night. Our combined gas and electric bill with N Power is £69 a month and this is a four bedroomed detached house. That does seem high Stray. what temperature do you run the thermostat at?

StrayKitten

StrayKitten Report 15 Feb 2010 12:38

I'll make you feel better! We are on bottled gas and our winter bill for three months was £479. Roll on the summer!

Seriously, the government says keep warm and don't worry about the bill, what planet are they on?

Stray, tell them you have a little one and make an offer to pay what you can afford, they can't really refuse.

We just installed an Electricity Monitor (free from British Gas) so we can see what we're using. Suprising to see the usage drop when the TV/microwave/deep freeze is switched off.
We have a massive Koi pond that runs pumps and stuff and when we switched them all all, our kWh usage dropped by half!! We can't switch them off this time of year tho incase any pipes freeze, but come the summer, it's all going on timers!!

Just ordered 500ltrs of heating oil, £263.00 should last a couple of months if we're careful.....yes, roll on the warmer weather I say:)
