Decimal coinage in UK

Did you remember that yesterday, the 15th February, was the 39th anniversary of decimal coinage being introduced to the UK?

That means it is also 39 years since I started a job in a brand new innovative hotel in Norwich, called The Hotel Nelson, after Lord Nelson. We wore uniforms in dark green heavy material trimmed with gold braid, to look like ship's stewards - very smart and the decor was Scandinavian design and very impressive. It was great fun working in somewhere so fresh, new and different and we served many famous customers and big wigs.
I met people there who were great colleagues and two are still very good friends of mine.
It is now the place where we hold Norwich meets but sadly has lost it's wonderful look and has been sold on several times to various hotel chains so all much of a muchness now. It is at the river's edge across from the Railway station so a nice view of the boats and such on a bright summer's day.

Imagine us all trying to get to grips with decimals, new fangled tills and a new job, ten waitresses in one restaurant and more waiters and waitresses in the even posher restaurant downstairs, or should I say, below!

That was also the day of the first price increase( for me anyway)
a bounty bar that previously was 9d equal to 3.75p
became 4p
(9.6d)

I remember the date 'cos its my Uncles birthday (Happy Birthday Uncle David lol) and the anniversary of my Mum finding out her dad was dead (he died 14th Feb 1957)
I don't remember the day as I was 6 yrs old in '71. However, I do remember my packet of Golden Wonder cheese and onion crisps had 6D crossed out and 2 1/2p written next to it.

I had such a good time working at the Hotel, was one of my more interesting jobs, the best one was being P.A. to a Private Eye tho lol
