should it take to install AVG9? Can I set it going when I go to bed and find it all done when I get up in the morning? Or will the phone be disconnected again when it has reached about 60% meaning that I have to start again from 0%?

Hi Huia,

Are you on dial up? Maybe it cuts out if you are online and someone is trying to phone you, or possbily the connection times out because it is taking so long. We used to have this problem with Paradise dial up, that, and the slow connection speed was the reason we switched to broadband. Your internet provider should be able to give you some assistance.

Thanks for that Hx, I will still start it going just before I go to bed tonight and hope it works, otherwise I will have to phone my IP on Sunday as I will be going out tomorrow.

I changed my mind about setting it going just before bed. I will try when I get home from visiting my OH today and if I am thrown off again I will phone my server.

Just a thought but if you get your OH or someone to download it from broadband ( it should only take a few minutes) but when the download starts select SAVE instead of Run and save it onto a DVD or a memory stick.
This will allow you to use the media when you get back to your computer and load the program offline only requiring you to update it when you are ready.

This time I was up to about 96% and thought I was home and hosed, but it cut out again, after about 95 mins. I am getting cross. How can I play on my computer if I have to keep going through this business? Or can I play on these boards while the AVG is installing?

I used AVG for several years but the last two versions have become more and more resource hungry that they noticeably slow down your computer to the point that it is a pain to use. Version 9 seems particularly horrible in this respect.

As a result I have now removed all traces AVG. My son and many of his friends have found the just same and confined it to the bin. My PC performance has improved beyond recognition.

My main protection now comes from Microsoft Security Essentials (Replacement to Windows Defender) which provides you with a firewall as well as anti-virus and anti-spyware protection.

As backup I also have Avira Antivisus together with Spybot Search and Destroy and Malawarebytes.

Time to download AVG9 to computer ....... 2 minutes.
Time to run download.......5 minutes.

Have you tried my above suggestion of saving download to DVD or memory stick from another computer with broadband?

IGP, does Microsoft Security Essentials include a Firewall?

Huia Report 20 Feb 2010 19:58

I found that the download is saved to my computer, but the installation is sooooo slow, about 3.6kbps (?) and takes about 5 hours as far as I can tell. I tried again starting at 11.45pm, hoping that I would not be cut off in the middle of the night, but only got to about 85% at about 2.40am when I was cut off again. I have not had much sleep.

What does IGP mean?

I will be phoning my IT nephew in a couple of hours to ask him a few questions. Knowing him he will possibly insist on coming out from Auckland (about 1 hr journey) to try to sort it for me. Otherwise I will have to ring my internet provider on Monday (tomorrow) to ask them if they can stop cutting me off, or if I would be better on broadband if I can get it out here (no cell phone coverage where I am, I dont know if that is significant).

Otherwise, one computer will be heaved over a bank or have an axe put through it.

Ah, I have just realised, Frank, IGP is short for InspectorGreenPen. Silly me, I thought it was some sort of computer thing.

My nephew is coming out this afternoon. I have tidied up the house a bit and swept the floor, but the dust and cobwebs can stay. Mustn overdo things, must I.

How can you remove AVG from your computer? We are fed up of it but it refuses to be deleted! Is there a trick to it?

Hi Katie,

To uninstall AVG or any other program...........

Click on Control panel / Programs / uninstall then select the program you wish to uninstall.

Make sure you have another anti-virus program installed before you go back online.

You could try Microsoft Security Essentials

I dont know about the " essentials" but when I had Defender on board it often complained about Mcaffee, well I pay for mcaffee so defender had to go........

Huia if you wish to swap to broadband you need to ask your internet provider if it is available in your area. I was on dial up for awhile then switched to broadband. Broadband will also work through your phone line. If you decide to go that way it is much faster on the net. I would also ask you nephew to set it up for you, it is not difficult to do, but there are a few confusing new plugs to install.

We do not get very good mobile coverage either, but we do get some now, for many years mobile coverage was non existent, we get major black spots of coverage here now. I would love to get wireless broadband, but think I would have major problems getting it to work.

Hi Huia,

If your current ISP is unable to provide broadband you could try Farmside. OH folks live in Takaka Golden Bay, and this is the ISP they use.

In the meantime, I hope your nephew is able to help :-)

Hi Huia,

Just to be clear with everything.......you are on dial-up and downloaded AVG9 to your computer.

When you started the download, did you RUN it, in which case it would download AND install on your computer at the same time.
Was it halfway through this download / install that it froze?

OR.....

Did you SAVE the download to your computer?
If you SAVED it to your computer....how long did it take?
Did it finish SAVING.
When it has finished saving the program, you will then have to find it in either Downloads or on your desktop.
You should then RUN the program to install it.
Did you RUN it?
Did it stop halfway through the download or halfway through the install?

Once the program is SAVED to your computer, it shouldn't take too long to install it, certainly not 5 hours or so.

If you are on dial-up and having problems finishing the download, it would be better to save the download to DVD or memory stick from a broadband computer.
You can then run the program from that media to your computer and update as required.

Do you presently have any anti virus or firewall running.
