You are not going to get much for £50

A Singer 4210 is around £140 these days. The Singer 7465 is £250, which are the going rates for decent machines.

l have a singer, l bought it from their website about 2-3yrs ago. It cost approx £70 - £80. Its a basic one and its fine:o))) Just look on their website!

Given that prices range from £50 to £5, 000 we need to know what your budget is. Clearly a £50 machine is not going to do an awful lot and is more likely to be confined to the skip as soon as it packs up. Around £250 seems to be the going rate these days for a decent machine. Have a look in John Lewis - they have a wide range. Ideal World also have some decent models from time to time - one of their presenters is also an accomplished machinist,.

We have a Bernina which was bought in the 1980's and has given sterling service. It wasn't cheap but apart from consumables, the only thing we have had to replace is the control pedal which packed up last year and cost around £30 for a replacement.

When the kids were little and money was tight, my wife made a lot of her own clothes and some for the kids too. These days it gets less use but we still make the likes of furnishings, curtains and blinds - it has paid for itself many time over.

i love the old singer sewing machines
they look nice,
and are so easy to use,

i have a frister and rossman, dad bought me when i was a teenager,
but it seems to not sew right now,
it gatthers up all the cotton on back of work,
in fact ive not used it in ages, cos of that reason,
love to make clothes

Aldi often have very reasonably priced sewing machines. I bought one about £40 last year for daughter-in-law and I think our store has some in their reduced section just now at £29!

Hi Helen, are you near a Dunhelm Mills? They had some Janome machines for less than £50 last time I was in. I was tempted to buy my Grandaughters one each, you can't go wrong with this make, it is what John Lewis stores make.
