To anyone who is thinking of moving to Australia - if you will be leaving close relatives in England think long and hard about the move as I have a relative who has had his heart wrenched out by the distance. He can't afford to visit often and they can't either.

If they haven't aleady done so, suggest they both get webcams and chat via that.

In our case, both (adult) grandchildren and grandparent have been able to do this. The grandparent is in a Residential Home, but the owner is more than happy to co-operate with WiFi and their own laptop. If we are talking hospitals, its worth asking if the same is possible.

Emmigrating is a difficult descision and not taken lightly. We didn't stand in the way of those who have, but regret we will be unable to have hands on experience of any offspring.

Hi Mick, glad your OK:)

My OH talked abt wanting to go to live in Oz, I wouldn't even think about it as it is too far and I'd miss my family/friends too much to have such a distance between us....

A visit would be nice infact have had an invite so would love to go at some stage.

Well you can't stop family doing what is right for them and it would be selfish to exert any pressure.

I am speaking from experience by the way not just spouting off.

Agrees with Sue.

I'm speaking from experience too Sue, and see the other side of things. It might be construed as also being selfish by leaving loved ones behind.

Sheila,

I have NO chance of seeing my son for X years and he lives in the middle of nowhere in Guatemala so a visit (with my health) is out of the question. It was his choice to try and make a go of a business there and he has been out of the UK for 7 years. He did come back for his sister's wedding a few years ago but heaven knows when I will see him next.

I miss him like hell but I wouldn't ever have said "don't go", we brought our children up to be independent and we can't complain once they are!

Australia is at the moment is the best place to live low unemployment a high standed of living, great weather if you like it hot or very wet no racial riots and we refuse to send are our troops to fight a war that we cant win , and we dont have to worry about getting blown up when we get on a train or bus .
